Inspired by the art of John Hogan, whose photographs reveal discord between the southwestern landscape and civilization’s encroaching infrastructure, Tacoma 1 and Tacoma 2 are identical southwestern landscapes featuring a Tacoma truck mysteriously parked on the berm of a two-lane highway winding through the desert. In Tacoma 2, the truck is a mirror silhouette. Reminiscent of a police officer’s reflective sunglasses or a 2-way mirror, the viewer is confronted with the possibility that the artwork is looking back at them, invoking thoughts about the border patrol or current surveillance state.
