A protest is a declaration of dissent, often in opposition to something people feel powerless to prevent or change. I do not wish to make light of the scourge of egregious injustices and appalling human rights abuses, which the world cannot abide, and, I am profoundly moved by Berliners’ extraordinary level of political engagement. However, in Berlin, especially among its youth, protest has come to resemble a kind of popular sport. I guess it is better that people have real skin in the game, rather than sitting on their hands, hoping others do the heavy lifting, but the sheer numbers of protest alone, and for seemingly any reason whatsoever, may dampen their impact.
