Located in the men’s locker room (I never saw the inside of the women’s locker room) behind a frequently locked iron gate, this wrought iron spiral staircase descended into a dark passageway which led to the handball courts, and eventually out to the boathouse. It was dark, cavernous, and mysterious to us kids, and we called it the tunnels, or secret passageway.
