work > nature of nature

A detournement of Mountain Paradise, a painting by the late evangelical kitsch painter Thomas Kinkade. Begun several months prior to Kinkade's death, this work-in-progress is a critical response to the American housing crisis, the extreme situation of America's entitlement to homeownership, and the Judeo-Christian myth of man's divinely ordained dominion over nature. As the video progresses, one by one we see Kinkade's signature garish exaggerations of majestic lighting, which I take as to represent the supposed gaze of God in which believers and their property bask, eliminated.
